Lifestyle: Our Airbnb Redesign with Nourison Rugs
In our domestic journey, we’ve busily been getting our Airbnb property up-to-par. We started with a blank slate – a 1960s home with good bones, but in desperate need of a makeover. Making the building functional and contemporary was a task brought beyond expectations by Cameron’s interior design skills.

As a sturdy older home with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath (the complete lower floor is not used for guests), the layout is cozy, but as an Airbnb, it serves as a solid homebase for travellers to rest and unwind between sightseeing or business ventures. The style direction that Cameron chose is an eclectic balance between minimalist Scandivanian, midcentury, and contemporary flair.
A joint effort between father and son-in-law, Cameron made all design decisions, and Bill (Rigel’s father) created custom woodwork pieces for the home. We had previously partnered with Nourison for many pieces for our home in Fall 2018 and knew their rugs would provide panache for each room of the Airbnb. Cameron sourced all other furniture and items from a range of retailers from Amazon to Wayfair to Ross and Marshall’s. On a budget, this home turned out upscale, and has become a steady business for our family.
The living room is harmonized by the large Fusion Beige/Gray rug, tying together the light wood coffee table, charcoal couch and chocolate loungers. This concept extends to the gather-friendly kitchen where Cameron used the distinct shape and rich darkness of the Mina Victory hide to play off the warmth of the kitchen table, creating a seamless yin-yang statement to the corresponding chrome and pastel gray elements surrounding.
The master’s Gemstone Jade rug and unique side tables compliment the warmer wood of the floor and window. Tropical accents with sky blue and white bedding make the tight space delightful rather than dingy. We wanted the second shared bedroom to be appropriate for either adults or children and accomplished this by using the elegant yet whimsical Vita Sage rug, making extra floor space by putting the two twin beds in their own corner rather than side by side.
Extra personality carries throughout color-popping artwork, greenery and mixes of patterns in the pillows and bedspreads. The Faux Fur Lumbar and Outdoor Throw pillows especially add dimension. Instead of looking dated, Cameron’s fantastic work made any limitations into opportunities with smart selections of pieces and palettes. We used the Midcentury Modern retro-fit accents to our advantage in creating charm and comfort.
